Synchronized Multimedia Streams over SCTP

چکیده

Over the past few years, the internet has been used to stream multimedia data in real-time over the net to a personal computer. This so-called "streaming" technology, made possible by using RTP over UDP, is both efficient and unreliable. As an alternative, the Internet Engineering Task Force invented the Stream-ControlTransmission-Protocol (SCTP), allowing one to mix unreliable data with reliable data and send this all within one stream. This paper explains how the simultaneous streaming of multiple data sources is already possible today. We have developed a streaming platform and with it a real-time extension to SCTP, the SCTP-Real-Time-Encapsulation (SCTPRTE), that can send data from a number of devices over the net, while defining the quality of reliability for each individual stream. In contrast to conventional streaming techniques such as the Real-Time-Protocol (RTP), we take advantage of the new Stream-Control-Transmission-Protocol (SCTP). Finally, our experiments have shown that SCTP-RTE is able to fulfill the requirements of a modern streaming platform. The performance of our approach is the same as that of RTP/UDP, but with the features of SCTP, this new protocol is more than an alternative for streaming multimedia content over the net.

Improving Multimedia Performance over Lossy Networks via Sctp

The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is a new Internet standards track transport layer protocol. SCTP was designed to transport PSTN signaling messages over IP networks, but SCTP is also capable of serving as a generalized transport protocol. As such, SCTP provides an alternative to the traditional transport protocols, TCP and UDP, that may be better able to satisfy the requirements ...

Improving the Performance of SCTP Transport Protocol over Wireless Networks

Stream Control Transmission Protocol(SCTP) is a reliable transport protocol combining the advantages of TCP and UDP. SCTP has many desirable features including multihoming, multistreaming, and partial data reliability. These features have made SCTP perform much more effectively in multimedia networking applications. They have also worked better in wireless environment which traditional transpor...

Sctp Multistreaming: Preferential Treatment among Streams

FCS networks are presented with a new transport layer mechanism that, for transmitting multimedia, is markedly superior to transmission over UDP or TCP. SCTP's multistreaming provides an aggregation mechanism for transferring different objects belonging to the same logical application session; however, sharing the congestion state among the streams precludes efficient stream prioritization. We ...

Performance Evaluations for Multimedia Applications over Pr - Sctp

As multimedia applications over the Internet proliferate, the efficient transport of both the signaling and multimedia data becomes increasingly important. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP), the two most widely used but limited transport protocols, are not well suited to contemporary multimedia applications involving digital voice, audio and video communicatio...
